Oil Water Separation

Many industries such as petroleum exploration and production, oil refinery, automobile industry, food industry, the textile industry and pharmaceutical industry discharge water that is contaminated with hydrocarbon or oil-like pollutants. In petroleum production, oil and other contaminates in the produced water need to be separated before the water can be reused or injected. There are various methods or combinations of methods can be used for separating oil water mixtures. Depending on the forms that oil exists in water, some methods are more effective than others. Among the forms that oil exists in water, emulsified oil water mixtures are extremely stable and therefore more difficult to separate.

At Free Flow Solutions, our scientists develop new filter membranes, and combine filter membranes with other oil water separation methods, such as aggregation-flotation, coagulation, etc. This new technology achieves superior separation results and the facility requires less maintenance. Our products are cost effective and environmentally friendly.

Development of Filter Membranes

Scientists at Free Flow Solutions developed new filter screens and membranes. The screens/ membranes coated with super hydrophilic oleophobic nanocoatings are effective in separating oil from water and the screens/ membranes coated with super oleophilic hydrophobic nanocoatings are effective in separating water from oil.  The filter screens/ membranes are designed at different mesh sizes depending on separation requirements of wastewater. They are extremely effective in separating emulsified oil-water mixtures. 

Consulting Services

Our team has extensive experience in research and software/firmware development in industries ranging from oil/gas production and multiphase flow to instrumentation and electronics. We provide consulting services in oil water separation, waste water treatment, virtual and actual flow metering etc.
